What's so amazing about grace?

I was approached 8 years ago to purchase the property at 440 Ketcham Street, which is now known as Amazing Grace. I made an offer and before I knew it, the property was mine. I immediately sought God’s leading and direction and committed to Him, complete obedience to His course.

Over the next year, I spent countless hours repairing, replacing and remodeling. All the while, I kept asking God, what He had planned for this facility.

Once it was ready, God put on my heart to open it on Friday evenings, from 6:00 pm - 8:30 pm, to the neighborhood kids. I wanted teenagers, God sent me babies. I fought God on this, but as He always does, he won. We now have over 100 children attend weekly. Amazing Grace is a safe place where children from the age of 2 to 18 can come to "just be a kid". Our volunteers oversee and play with them, provide a hot meal and end the evening with a devotion. Relationships are created and develop weekly. Additionally, we provide weekly Bible Studies, Tutoring, and have a beauty salon.

Each year, right before school starts, we pass out new backpacks filled with all the supplies they will need. The children are excited to have a new, fully packed backpack. We also have an annual Trunk R Treat at Halloween. The children are allowed to dress up that evening and go from car to car "trick-or-treating". Everything we do, we are teaching these children the love of Jesus.

I believe God is telling me to continue to expand this ministry. There are many areas which we dream of expanding into. Over the past three years, we have added a girls night every Monday and a boys Bible study every Tuesday. Any child between the ages of 10 and 18 are invited. A variety of things are discussed by the girls including education on teen dating and violence, sexual assault awareness, healthy relationship classes, life skills, purity and manners classes.

I invite you to help us pray for God's direction for what is needed at Amazing Grace. How can we further help these children in need? Additionally, will you ask for God’s grace to show you how you are to be a part of this outreach through our ministry? As we grow, we need more volunteers. Won't you consider helping us be the hands and feet of Jesus to these precious ones?

What is it about this place that is so amazing that these children feel so secure, safe, loved and belonging? I watch them run up the steps and into the doors of Amazing Grace to chat with friends, laugh, play and enjoy a four course meal and Bible stories. Maybe it could be the loving volunteers, each with compassion for children. Or is it betting on what J.R. is cooking up for the following Friday or defeating him in kickball? Surely it has to be the smiles, encouragement, love and discipline all the volunteers show and tell the children. But by all means it’s the gathering of the prayer circle, praying and laying hands on the needy.
